Thanks guys. Also big thanks to Mac and Diggers. It was a great help to have two Rapid Fire old hands on hand with several players new to the game, and my own grasp on the rules at times a bit sketchy.

Now you've seen what I've got if any of you guys want to borrow any kit for a game let me know, though diggers has got me envious of those great Plastic Soldier figures and thinking I maybe should think about upgrading. Next time I'll probably do all the preliminary stuff like drawing cards etc. the week before, and I'll have to get some lists of other people's kit so I came write up some more Battalion/Reinforcement cards. KVs and some aircraft would be good for starters!

Btw how many KVs do you have, diggers? I'll make up a Battalion/Reinforcement card for them. I seem to remember that you've got some Pz IIIs and Tigers as well. Any aircraft German or Russian?

I guess Mac's got more stuff than he can list.

Really enjoyed the game on Wednesday, just wish I could get to the club more often. Martin big Paul and I have a lot of British, German, Russian and Americans (I think). I just need some motivation to sort my stuff out and I think the game you put on has done that.

I'll be down the club in two weeks and might be able to provide a list of what I have for you.

What's different about the mortar fire?

Yes thanks for a great game.

Looks like my skill a moving my reserves up right in front of German armour is still a live.
Unlike the T34s.

Looking fwd to some more games like it. And note to self remember where the main objectives are.

Ben must win the how many Russians can you hide in a small village competition.

As you may remember Mac, you thought that all IDF fire including mortars needed a radio check and I didn't. I also didn't think we needed to use a fire grid, and mentioned to Martin on the way home that I thought all mortar fire was always indirect (ie. you never use range bands), which is how he thought they worked when they had sight of the target. I've just checked the rulebook on the mortars and IDF in general and this is what it says:

"OPs in Infantry Battalions

8.76 Mortars and guns that are part of an infantry battalion or regiment do not require radio tests for IDF. Any figure in the HQ group of the battalion can act as an OP for these weapons and can direct their fire if they can see the target. Battalion weapons can only be controlled by their own HQ group and not by HQ figures from other battalions. These OPs do not add 12" to their observation ranges.

8.77 If one of the battalion's companies is defending an isolated position, any HQ figure may be attached to act as an OP for the battalion's support weapons."

(It is because of rule 8.77 I have several individual officer figures painted up to be HQ co. observers, which is perhaps why I remember it).

On (Medium and Heavy) mortars specifically rule 8.96 says "They are always treated as firing IDF, even if the mortar crew is able to observe the target" (ie. you don't use range bands, although I'm not sure we remembered the rule that mortars hit their target on the SECOND fire on 4,5 or 6 -5 or 6 if a moving target- rather than 5 or 6 on the first shot - 6 on a moving target).

On the subject on fire grid, these aren't mentioned in the Basic Rules at all in the section on IDF Procedure (rules 8.72 to 8.75). They are mentioned in the Advanced Rules in rule 14.5 on 'Predicted Fire' and 14.7 on Barrages. It describes predicted fire as "Predicted or 'map' fire is a type of IDF used when no friendly OP can see the target...and is less accurate than observed fire." It describes a barrage as a "curtain of predicted fire". My reading of this is that when you have an OP you don't use a fire grid (although casualties are limited by the 4" diameter risk zone).

Although I don't have the first edition rules, I remember someone telling me you had to use a fire grid with them. My reading of the Second Edition rules that I have is that if you have an OP to direct fire it either hits its target or it doesn't hit anything. If you use 'predicted fire' (including a barrage) without an OP then you definitely need a fire grid as the shells fall over an area rather than being accurately directed at a target by an OP.

All my recollections on Rapid Fire rules are from the first edition book, I have the second one somewhere but have never gotten round to reading it.

It was still a good game.

Oh dear what have we started! A rebellion against Ancients! Rapid fire is quick game so long as you don't put too much on the table, small is good as you could easily put in a couple of games in an evening, swap sides and see if you could do it differently. However a larger game like last Wednesdays is also fun.

But you do need to have set objectives, and stick to them, there are also rules for building occupancy, digging into hard cover etc. looking forward to the next game.
