Games for Wednesday 20th March

Post  Reece on March 17th 2013, 21:49

What games are on this week. I think Simon is down so AWI or Muskets and Tomahawks may be on the cards.

Cheers

No chance to paint stuff last week. So AWI looks more likely.

AWI it is then. I have an idea for a scenario involving an American blocking force.

Battle report_ The Fleeing Of Phoebe from Thebes

Post  Mrbootsthecat on March 21st 2013, 09:47

Last night Chris and Liam took on the role of brutal opressessors as Phil and I played the role of valiant upholders of womens rights. No typecasting there!

The situation was Phoebe was escaping a forced marriage to the spartan king. The Theban army was escorting her back to Thebes. The Spartan army was slightly bigger 3000 as opposed to 2500 points. The terrain was mainly flat and open, with a steep ridge of hills running along the north side of the table. There were two passes through this riidge, and the spartan army could only bring its formed units onto the table through these. Skirmishers could cross the ridge without penalty.

The Theban army started in the east side of the table, and had to get Phoebe off to the West. As an aside, Phils eleven year old had painted Phoebe, and there was some critical discussion about whether she was the best painted thing in Phils army! Nice to see Phil supporting child labour.

The Theban depoloment was a swarm of skirmishers on their northen edge, then the hill tribesmen and the the formed phalanxes, with Phoebe in the middle of the phalanxes. Obviously, the flanks were formed of fleet floot flitting around and forcing the issue ( OK, Ill try and stop using all the alliteration on the letter f)
The Spartans poured skirmishers over the ridge, their faster peltasts and helots through the eastern pass and the solid line of spartans through the western pass.

The thebans came on in columns and started the long plod westwards. The skirmishers closed, and in a devastatig volley of javelins, the spartans destroyed one unit and scared another into routing. The formed spartiate units marched across the table, closing the door to the column of Thebans. The skirmishers continued exchanging missile fire, and then the helots and peltasts came close enough to charge the Theban (Thracian ) hillmen units. This proved to be a shock, as the thabn high command (Well OK, it was me) thought they would be able to hold these. Both units of hillmen promptly broke in the first round of combat.

At the head of the army, the Theban hoplite units started to reform from column to battle formation. One unit of hoplites charged a Spartan peltast unit who had just routed the hillmen. These, seeing how vulnerable they were, thought discretion was the better part of valour, and fled instead of fighting. A good round of rallying saw most units on both sides gather their wits and return to the fray.

The Spartan blocking force was led by the Kings unit. As he had closd up to the southern edge of the table, he ordered the Spartans out of their column formation and into a battle line. As well drilled troops, they all obeyed. Except his unit... These stubbonly remained in column. The Spartan units on the northern side continued their pressure, destroying another unit of skirmishers and re routing the previously scared ones who had rallied. One unit of spartan skirmishers had squeezed through a gap in the Theban line, where it turned 90 degrees from facing north to west, in the angle of the L shaped line. A unit of peltasts was closing in on the flank of the Theban units that were facing West.

Eventually, the spartan king made his unit see sense and they formed battle line. Theskirmishers infiltrating the Theban line scored a few hits. More Theban skirmishers to the north died in a hail of javelins. Phoebe was behind the west facing battle line, which was outnumbered three to four, with the fifth unit of peltasts closing on its flank.

The Thebans prepared to fight and die for her valour. Some skirmishers closed on the infiltrators, and wiped them out with a concentrated volley of slingshot. A north facing unit of hoplites declared a charge on a unit of peltasts, who decided to fire and flee. Their volley of javelins was ineffective, and the distance they rolled for the flee was 1"... which saw them run down and wiped out. The only Theban unit close enough to charge the Spartn lines was facing the kings unit. They charged. Despite being less skilled, and not having their king with them, they smashed into the Spartan ranks. Dismal dice throwing saw them only hitting once, although they converted this into a kill. The Spartans fought back. Obviously, this unit was led by the king as they needed close supervision. The dice were thrown, and they only managed to make one kill. The Thebans, astoundingly, had won the combat. The Spartans had to check morale, throwing three dice and needing the lowest two to total eight. They came up a six, five and four...The Spartans broke

The Theban pursuit was the lowest two of three dice, totalling a meagre six inches. The Spartans threw their dice..... and only managed five! The unit was run down and destroyed, including the king dying. The nearest Spartan unit seeing this had to check morale. And promptly broke and fled

The Thebans had broken through. Phoebe had an unbloked passage to the west ( OOH ERR Missus!)

Time was called there. A very enjoyable game, with a very unexpected ending. It was most unlike war and conquest, as normally troops are quite solid in combat, but they were breaking and routing almost instantly in this game
