Cold War fun
Having managed to recently score a copy of cold war commander and about 200 US vehicles in 6mm with change from 60 quid it looks like I might be moving into this period for a bit.
Hopefully I will be able to bring a game back with me from Uni on a visit sometime. Anyone fancy collecting some russians?

Re: Cold War fun
what period of modern warfare are your americans ?
how many bases of foot/vehicles would one need to field a russian army?
any recommended figure ranges?
are there any online army lists?
i am only asking this in case anyone else is interested but too shy to ask!!!

Steve, looks like you need to get enough to break through a British and an American task force

Re: Cold War fun
Best bet is probably to pick a brigade you like the history off and then use the Orbats to work out what to get. I've got the Cold War Commander rules for it atm. There a devil to get hold off atm though as Pendrakon have the rights and there sitting on them for the moment :/ Period wise its late 1980s into the 90s.

Re: Cold War fun
what would be useful to know is does 1 vehicle equal 1 vehicle or is it a troop platoon or whatever
again does infantry work out 1 to 1 or is a base a squad/platoon etc?
think i saw something that cold war commander could do either
if martin ( i had forgotten about him ,or at least tried to) is getting british i only need a few clever diplomats to remind you of the spat you both had in the late 18th century and can then just walk in and pick up the pieces after you have settled your differences .

Re: Cold War fun
On a sad note. I have some 6mm Argies. Left over from a Falklands campaign years ago. It's inf art and some transports. Could be used as U.S. Forces. Baring the land rover with an Argie flag on the roof.

Re: Cold War fun
I did actually post a reply to your original set of questions and it has vanished? Gremlins somewhere...
1 stand inf =platoon
1 vehicle =sqn/troop
It can be done as 1 stand to a squad or vehicle as well but the rules are designed for the former.
Figure range wise Heroics and Ros or Scotia for vehicles is the cheaper option or GHQ for quality. GHQ is a bit bigger though, I'm only going to use there infantry.
There are a few army lists on the website.

Re: Cold War fun
looking at some soviet orbats for late 80's . sources seem to disagree on exact strengths but i guess they would vary anyway .
are you fielding tank division / brigade or infantry
i expect martin would consider going tank heavy . that is because he likes tanks and not because he is............
do you intend to base your vehicles? some players like to others not.
how many infantry figures are you using for a stand

Re: Cold War fun
I'm planning on being quite fluid with it, just using battalion level ORBATs as a building blocks and having a variety of tank, light inf, mechanized inf battalions e.t.c to pick and choose from.
I have a single tank battalion of Abrams completed so far and their all on 2p coins same with a couple of based stands of inf which are about 4-5 figures on them.

Re: Cold War fun
From what I can make out of the ebay pictures its:
14 challengers
14 warriors
50 various vehicles. I can make out a few Scimitars, fv432s, landrovers and I think there are a couple of SPGs in there.

Re: Cold War fun
so the nato forces are growing a pace .
althought i am still interested in getting some warsaw pact stuff , it will be a few months before that starts , so won,t have figures etc until the new year .
i do have the material to base the figures on when i do get them so could field a cardboard army if that does not upset the purists.or i could field lots of off table artillery .
is cold war commander the sort of set that both players need to have an understanding of the rules before playing it/probably need their own set in that case .
or is suitably simple you can pick it up as you go along ?

Re: Cold War fun
Its Warmaster but with tanks Its fairly simple but it would be worth getting the rules for the army lists if nothing else. However there hard to come by at the minute unless Pendrakon re-release them anytime soon.
I do want to get some Warsaw pact so that I can run some games while at uni. If I can get hold of some soonish for a good price I will try to bring a game back with me over Christmas break.
