Another dirt cheap wargaming suggestion

Post  PeterT on October 24th 2015, 10:53

A couple of months back I was on eBay and drifted on to the board games section looking for something to base a WW2 game on, and saw Steve's Collectibles down in Gravesend town centre auctioning off some board games at very low starting prices, got distracted bid on some and won a couple of bargains.

On going down to Steve's shop (actually first time I've been in there) I noticed some nice looking pirate ship models. It turns out these are 'pocket models', that is models printed and stamped on credit card type plastic that you just press out and assemble and come in sets complete with rules, a die 6 and some other cards for coins, special captains and crew etc. for a game called Pirates. Steve apparently bought all the outstanding stock at a rock bottom price from a distributor and is selling them at the outstanding good price of £2 for a boxed set (there may be boosters too). For this you get 5 ships to build in with the complete game. I had thought to use them as the basis of modelling more elaborate models (trimming and painting the edges of the cut outs, replacing the flat sales with some more elaborate ones etc.) but decided they actually looked pretty good as assembled and could game with them straight away rather than adding them to an already over long project list, and could either convert them later or just buy more at that price. I've grabbed three sets for myself already, which should be plenty for now, but as the National Flags etc. can be swapped around so if you really wanted to build up some 'proper' fleets you could.

I'm sure a serious Naval war-gamer would turn up their nose, but I'm not and only ever likely to dabble in it, for which these little models seem perfect.

I thought anyone on a budget might be interested as these really are at 'pocket money' prices.

The game that comes with it seems pretty simple but very playable. You sail your ships around, can stop off at various islands to try and pick up treasure and/or attack other ships for their treasure before returning to home port. Ship classes vary based on the different number of masts they have which also determines how many batteries of guns they have. Each mast has a different coloured die 6 printed on it, the colour of the die determining the cannons range and the number on the die the score needed to hit. Every successful roll to hit takes out a mast (and some guns) on an enemy ship and ship sinks when it loses all its masts. There are more complicated advanced rules that brings in stuff like your captains skill and special crew but appears nothing that is very difficult.

Obviously as well as using modelling skills to upgrade the ships you could better model the ports and islands. Naturally you can use the ships for an entirely different set rules if you wanted to.

I'll probably bring them along for a game one night, but thought I'd mention them iit case anyone was interested.

Got two more boxes worth assembled yesterday. Has added up to a decent sized little fleet. I've tried to upload a couple of photos, though not sure if it has worked.
